OSX Crash on start

stephenE 8 years, 8 months ago

I looked through some previous OSX Crash threads and this seems different. Just downloaded the lastest release (2010-09-30 for mac universal) and dragged the unzipped folder into my applications folder. Start the program and I get the splash screen with progress bar, the breadboard/schematic/pcb changer appears, and then the main window with breadboard view shows for about half a second before it quits. Get the mac "fritzing cannot be opened because of a problem" dialog. Heres the dump from it:

Hi Stephen,

Two questions.  Did you also get a stack trace?--if so, please post it as well.  Second, we ended up building two different mac binaries with this release, one labeled "Mac OS X" and the other "mac osx 10.4".  Would you mind downloading and trying the other release to see if the results are any different?

Thanks.

- j

stephenE 8 years, 8 months ago

The 10.4 specific download launched fine and I was able to make a simple circuit and use autotrace on the PCB view. Seems solid.

I'm not sure how to get a stack trace - google wasn't much help to me there. Willing to learn though.

Thanks,

~Stephen

Jonathan Cohen 8 years, 8 months ago

Thanks for the update.

Usually the when the mac crashes, there's a report dialog that comes up, and when you save that report to a file, it includes a stack trace.

In terms of the crash, there's a fair amount of web traffic on the "symbol not found _EVP_idea_cbc" that seems to be related to certain versions of OpenSSL.   Do you have any sense whether the openssl library (/usr/local/lib/libssl.0.9.8.dylib) comes standard on your mac?

stephenE 8 years, 8 months ago

Ok, I think I know what you mean now. It has all the threads and then the massive cascading trace. Unfortunately none of the crashes seem to have provided such for Fritzing. That first post contains the whole thing that crash reporter stored in my log files.

As for the libssl.0.9.8.dylib I did follow that file path and found it there, as well as an alias simply called libssl.dylib. When I try and have the alias "show original" it says the original item cannot be found. Executing openssl -version in terminal gives me "OpenSSL 0.9.8l 5 Nov 2009"

Hopefully that helps a little

~Stephen

dirk 8 years, 8 months ago

As far as I can see openssl comes standard on Mac OS X. I'm running Snow Leopard, 10.6.4, and my libssl is located in `/usr/lib/` instead of in `/usr/local/lib/`. I also have "OpenSSL 0.9.8l 5 Nov 2009". I also have this symlink `libssl.dylib` but in my case it points correctly to the libssl.0.9.8.dylib in the same directory.

Maybe if you just fix that symlink to point to the right lib, it might all work.

The new Fritzing, 0.4.3, works fine on my machine.

HTH, Dirk

stephenE 8 years, 8 months ago

Just looked in usr/lib and found it also has libssl.0.9.8.dylib as well as .0.9.7 and .0.9 and that symlink.

Trashed the libssl.0.9.8.dylib in usr/local/lib and now the program launches and runs fine, so it seems it was a quirk with my setup rather than an issue with the coding.

Haven't seen any ill effects from the removal yet... will let it sit in trash limbo for a while.

Thanks for your help Dirk and Jonathan
