Design Rules, too close
Hello, I'm working on my first PCB design. I'm packing quite a lot on it to save money. I find the Trace Design Rules Check surprises me with "too close" warnings. What is the minimum distance the rules require and what are the potential problems with the fab service if I go under the min?
Thanks.

Yeah same problem here - I have used auto route, and it looks ok to me, but a lot of it is highlighted in red.
First off, apologies to Daryl--somehow your post slipped through without a reply.
There is a bug in the autorouter which generates routes that the DRC will complain about. This is definitely on our list of things to be fixed.
Basically, if you go below the minimum distance, our fabricator will complain, and you will be risking a short-circuit. The minimum distance is 7mils (.007 inches). More details can be found in the Fab FAQ.

Hmm, I don't use auto route at all. From my experience the minimum distance appears to be at least 25 mils. Is there someplace I can upload a sample file?

Sorry, I wasn't clear before. The fabricator's minimum distance is not the same as Fritzing's DRC minimum distance, which is set for home-etching. In a future release, we will make this distance a preference setting.
You can email your file to info .at. fritzing .dot. org.
So when are you going to fix this bug?
i cannot realy use fritzing for design if i cannot count on the autorouter and the and the DRC?
hope you'll fix this soon couse i realy like your software and find it much more freindly then other.
Hi Green Light,
We find that in practice people whoe use the autorouter use it as a first-pass, and then do hand-tweaking. This process seems efficient enough that we have not set the priority on this bug to critical. Your feedback will bump the priority up a notch.
Cheers,
- j
