remove a part but keep the wiring in PCB view?

In PCB view (I am using only this is my actual project) I want to remove a part within extensive wiring. However, it also deletes the whole wiring. How can I keep the wiring?

Hi Herbert,

If you are lucky, you can use the Inspector to swap one part with another and keep the wiring. This mechanism works when you are swapping similar parts, like one resistor for another, or one capacitor for another. If the connectors on the old and new part have the same name, then the wiring gets preserved.

If the two parts are not swappable (or are swappable but have different connector names), then you could do the following: drop the new part, then for each connection on the old part, drag one end of the wire from the point it connects to the old part and drop it on the appropriate connector of the new part.

The only other technique I can think of would be to hand-edit the sketch file xml, but this would be quite tricky, and in the end it would probably be easier to redraw all the wiring in Fritzing.

I wonder if there is a general approach to this, for example a "reassignment" UI in which you pick a source part and a destination part, and get a UI which allows you to select the pins on the first part to reassign to the pins on the second part. But it seems just as easy to drag the wire ends as suggested above.

Hi,

what about making the wiring persistent / stand alone?
That way the wires will stay there even after deleting the parts they are connected to, and on the other hand, this would allow to draw just a part of a wire.
I would like this a lot, because i often route one part of a layout and later another part.

Hi Thomas,

Not a bad idea, and it's what we used to do in breadboard view. No doubt some nasty implications I'm not considering at the moment.

Thanks all for your suggestions, but nothing seems to help.

If someone wants to have a look at the part in question, to where can I upload the fzz file?

The problem is a power plug, which I want to replace with just pads for a battery. Unfortunately, the whole VCC wiring is attached to the power plug, which would make considerable work...

Hi Herbert,

You can email your sketch to info .at. fritzing .dot. org.

Thanks, j, it's appreciated. I've just done this.

Hi Herbert,

No email yet...  Maybe check the recipient address.

Done, thank you.

As quick workaround (based on a suggestion in another forum post), I've added a right-click function to create a via from a bendpoint in pcb view. This will be available in 0.7.5. It doesn't preclude implementation of Thomas's suggestion, but that will take some time to build.

I've added a via to your sketch and emailed it back to you.

Cheers.
