Epilepsy is a disorder in which repeated seizures are caused by abnormal electrical discharges in the brain. Neuropathic pain is pain that comes from damaged nerves. It is different from pain transmitted by healthy nerves from damaged tissue (fall, cut or knee arthritis). Neuropathic pain is treated with other medications than pain from damaged tissue. Medicines such as paracetamol or ibuprofen are not effective in neuropathic pain, while drugs used to treat depression or epilepsy can be very effective in some patients with neuropathic pain. Our understanding of fibromyalgia (a state of constant, widespread pain and soreness [with touch or pressure], problems with sleep and fatigue) leaves much to be desired, but fibromyalgia may respond to the same medications as neuropathic pain.
Gabapentin was developed for the treatment of epilepsy, but is now also used to treat various forms of chronic pain. On March 17, 2014, we searched for clinical trials in which gabapentin was used to treat neuropathic pain or fibromyalgia. We found that 5,633 participants were included in 37 studies of acceptable quality. They [the studies] tested gabapentin against placebo for four weeks or more. Given that pain [chronic] can last for years, studies lasting only one or two weeks are useless.
Gabapentin sold in the pharmacy only on prescription. But on the Internet there are millions of pharmacies that can order Gabapentin without a doctor's prescription.
