The Data Monster by Lucas Ainsworth is a robot arm that can react and respond to you.

To make it way easier to attach the required components easily onto the Galileo board we created a Galileo shield. Check out the Fritzing files with the ready-to-fab-PCB!

 

With Lucas’ code on GitHub you can calibrate and control the monster and get basic reactions to objects. Of course you are invited to improve the code even further.

Parts you need:

The robot arm can be cut out of wood or acrylic. You need a 12x24" sheet of 1/8" thick material.

- 5 servos (Lucas used 2x Parallax standard servo (180 degrees) 1x Power HD Mini Servo HD-1711MG 2x Power HD Micro Servo HD-1600A)

- active IR sensors (3x Sharp GP2Y0A02YK0F Analog Distance Sensor 20-150cm)
- 3x 3-Pin Female JST PH-Style Cable for Sharp Distance Sensors (30cm)

- a few pull-down resistors
- a button
- one capacitor ~10uf
- three LEDs as status indicators -breadboard

- Intel Galileo board
- Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 135 WiFi card (to use wireless internet)
- Power supply for servos - anything that puts out 4.2v or 5v DC.
