Parts exchange

I suppose this another application of file uploads, but why not crowdsource part creation like Google did for Sketch-up by creating a centralized online library of user- and professional- created parts?  While all could be available, perhaps every so often the best and most commonly imported/downloaded could be standardized and integrated into the default parts toolbox.  And anyone could upload a finished part.  It's working really well so far for Sketch-up.

Absolutely! That's where we always wanted to go, we just didn't have the resources yet to do so. SketchUp is indeed a good model for that. Our current system is just a placeholder and when we get some more funding this one is high on the list.

Is there any unofficial place to upload or link parts in the mean time? I've just finished a zener diode and I'm planning on starting a couple more parts.

For now you can upload parts by going to http://code.google.com/p/fritzing/issues/detail?id=875.

Looking forward to it...

Given that this hasn't happened in a year, would anyone have a problem if I just wrote a parts exchange site and hosted it off site?  It would take me a weekend and I'd be happy to do it.  I'm pretty darn good at this sort of thing.

Hi Bruce,

Thanks for the offer.  We still hope to host a parts-exchange on-site at some point, but it looks like that won't happen any time soon.  So go for it.  We'd also be curious to talk with you about which website framework you selected, and eventually how the off-site exchange could reintegrate with an on-site one.

Cheers,

- j

I would usually write something like this using PHP+CakePHP+MySQL.  That has the advantage of easily (a couple lines of code) pushing XML feeds out.  That would make it pretty easy to port.   I would say that it would seem BEST to use a canonical domain off fritzing.org in order to preserve links in the long run.  The app could be written in such a way that the URL mapping would match YOUR framework so that long term Google results would pull up.   Of course, that involves trust on your end, so if you wanted to go a different way, I could register fritzingparts.com or somesuch, build it and gift you the domain / system when you're ready.  Alternately, if you have a PHP + MySQL server laying around, I can just write and give you the code + provide support for it as necessary.   CakePHP is pretty dang easy when dealing with this sort of thing.   If you want community input, perhaps a feature request thread would be in order?

Something to think about.  If you'd like, please feel free to email me and we can discuss any concerns you might have that you might not want to post here.
