disable some features

After working on a pcb last night I discovered the more parts I added, the slower Fritzing responded (mac and pc). I'm really happy with the result but I'm hesitant to change some small details cause it's just not worth it. Adding parts works alright, but after adding them Fritzing freezes for a minute. Some possible causes / solutions:

- add a checkbox in preferences to disable rat's nest. (It goes loco and isn't useful with larger pcb's. It's no rat's nest anymore, it's just a big colored, rather beautiful, blob)

- disable updating other views. I'm only interested in the one I'm using, for me it's the pcb. If I change to breadboard I wouldn't be annoyed with an alert box telling me: "you are swithing to breadboard view. Currently it's not up to date. Update view now or stay in pcb view". After choosing update view a bar would tell me how long this would take. (cause this is rather strange as well. When Fritzing starts slowing down you loose all feedback. The only thing confirming I'm actually making a breakpoint is the spinning beachball after 10 seconds)

-and it would also be handy if I could copy parts of my design with traces. In pcb view I selected parts of my design and traces, but after pasting them the traces would be gone.

I don't know if this would speed things up, just my thoughts.

Fritzing is increasing constantly and this problem will be more obvious.

I proposed to split it in three parts... It will help adding more and useful features to all parts.

This will speed things up for sure.

I didn't used it for a while... is using JAVA? That is a performance killer from start.

Hi Guys,

zero - You can turn off the rats nest under the View menu.  Just unclick the "Rat's nest" view and the lines will go away.

Vasi - Fritzing is written in C++.  It generally gets faster with each release.  What sort of specific performance problems are you having?

I quickly found out about the view options (very handy) and turned everything except board layer off. I also disabled all views in schematic and breadboard view.

Nevertheless lot's off stuff is being updated after each adjustment I'm making causing Fritzing to slow down.

I've just started reading the google code page and discovered nothing I've noted here is new for you guys. Sorry about repeating same things.

However I couldn't find the copy with traces in pcb view thing I've been experiencing (and copying lots of parts causes crashing on my mac as well if I try to save).

PCB is almost ready and I'm really happy with the outcome.

Hi Zero,

Copy with traces is on our list of things to fix, don't know how it escaped us for so long.

The next big release will take care of the ratsnest and updating issues, but that won't be out for some months yet.  Once you get about 50 parts in a sketch, and they're all connected to ground, Fritzing does get really slow.

If you could email your sketch to info (at) fritzing (dot) org, with a little explanation of what you tried to copy and paste when it crashed, that would help us find the bug.

Thanks.

PS.  Since it's come up before--disabling the other views will not substantially speed things up.
