Exported image files are a little bit garbaged

Hi,

I have been trying to draw diagrams of a simple circuit, but I have problems about exporting as follows:

  • PDF: Looks fine with Preview.app and Adobe Reader 9.1.0, but looks garbaged when opened with Illustrator CS3
  • SVG: Wires looks too thick when opened with Illustrator CS3
  • PS: Mysterious black rectangles appear with Preview.app and Illustrator CS3

I'm sorry if my data is wrong, but I'd like to report here just to make sure.

Hi Shigeru,

Thanks for the report--it was especially helpful that you sent us the zip file.

Unfortunately, to be honest, I'm not sure what we can do to fix things. We'll try to figure out whether the PS bug is a general one, and not just specific to Preview and Illustrator.

Since the PDF is working in Reader (the PDF also looks fine in version 8.1), I'm not so inclined to tackle an Illustrator-only problem. Also, the PDF and PS export engines that we use are part of Qt (our development environment), so I doubt we'll try to hack anything at that level.

We know about the blobby wires problem with Illustrator and SVGs, and we believe that it's an Illustrator bug. All Fritzing svgs use inches as measurement units. Illustrator converts all imported SVGs into its internal measurement units (which I think are 72 dpi). Unfortunately, Illustrator doesn't bother to convert the stroke-width attribute of the lines (wires) from inches to pixels, so as a result, you get blobby wires.

Sorry I can't tell you anything more upbeat. Have you tried Inkscape?

Cheers,

Actually, now that I think about it, we can try to solve the Illustrator blobby wires problem by exporting our SVGs at 72 dpi. If this trick works, it'll be in the next version of Fritzing.

Hi Jonathan,

That trick sounds really good. I'd like to test the new version. We have a plan to use Fritzing for a project, and will be able to contribute parts.

Hi Shigeru,

Would you mind to send an email to info@fritzing.org so I can have your email address? I will send you a couple of svgs to test using the new trick to see whether it works.

We'd be delighted for you to use fritzing on your project, and it would be splendid if you were able to contribute parts.

Cheers,
