What is the point in having the led labeled "hello" plugged into the digital pin 8 on the target arduino? I set this up just on a breadboard to try and figure it out but it didn't light up at all during a bootload.

Hi , as i said this is only a mod of an existing project . The label "hello" is used to test the microcontroller , after you burned the bootloader you can try to upload a simple sketch that make the "Hello" LED blink. Not really important :)

I thought that in order to upload a sketch to an ATMega328 you had to use the FTDI chip in the Arduino, as outlined on this page: http://arduino.cc/en/Tutorial/ArduinoToBreadboard
